For over six decades Sir David Attenborough and the BBC have epitomised the discovery and understanding of our natural world, pushing unprecedented levels of innovation to tell untold stories about our planet. While the stories are timeless, how we consume content has changed, giving us new ways to discover and experience life on earth. You can now explore your favourite moments, watch curated collections from Sir David and others, or create and share your own collections with the world. Available now here.
The main idea and intention was to assemble the largest collection of Sir David Attenborough’s most informative and breathtaking moments and give viewers the control to define their own discovery of the natural world. Sir David Attenborough’s Story of Life app features over 1,000 landmark clips spanning over 60 years, to inspire a love and awe for the natural world in every generation. You can create personal collections, share them with the world and discover an endless number of journeys through nature shaped by your interactions with the app.
This was one of the most exciting and challenging projects to work with. I had the pleasure to develop the iconography that would visually represent the content inside the app, and in that way, I was shaping the way people would interact with it. Readability, harmony and originality were the main factors that drove this approach, having started with a more abstract style that lead to a simpler version with smooth lines and a very nice balance between negative and positive space.
Every single icon fits within a grid and they all share the same visual ADN thanks to a modular system which allows several pieces to be combined together to create a new icon, therefore maintaining similarity between them.
The collection can be searched by ‘Habitat’, ‘Species’ and ‘Behaviour’, allowing users to quickly and intuitively find out more about their favourite creatures, watch scenes from loved series, or explore the incredible beauty of our planet. A series of exclusive films are also hidden throughout the app to encourage the audience to explore the full extent of Sir David's remarkable archive. Curated playlists by Sir David, BBC Filmmakers and others highlight cherished moments. You can also create your own collections of favourite moments to share with the world on social media, or keep within the app to revisit whenever you want.
“This is natural history for the digital age,” said Sir David. “Allowing people to explore the story of life on earth and share their favourite natural history moments with the world.”
This is a slightly different and more abstract approach that I wanted to try in order to be able to blend all icons together with perfect ligatures in a seamless pattern. Due to readability, legibility and its use inside an app we had to go a bit more realistic but I still like this one a lot too!
From fans of the natural world through to the world’s press, Story of Life launched to huge acclaim. Averaging 5 star ratings across both the App Store and Play store, it’s brought the world of nature to new generations, in a way they can understand and interact with.
The Story of Life can be downloaded for iPhone, iPad and Android phones and tablets, and best of all, it's completely free. But if you want to view the content through your browser instead, you can head to bbc.com/storyoflife
